CMEEC’s MicroGen project is a peaking generation program that consists of approximately 50 MW of capacity across 20 behind-the-meter generators located at nine sites within our Municipal Electric Utility (MEU) service territories. By combining local generation with active load management, the program enhances reliability while lowering energy costs.
Operational since 2010, these resources are integrated with demand response and load management programs, allowing CMEEC to reduce system demand during peak periods and respond quickly to changing grid conditions.
A handful of units are strategically deployed at key facilities, including Backus Hospital and the Mohegan Tribal Utility Authority. The Backus Microgrid Project generators serve both as peak shaving units for CMEEC and backup generators for the Backus Hospital in Norwich, Connecticut.
