The Subase Fuel Cell project is a 7.4 MW natural gas-fired fuel cell facility located at the U.S. Navy Submarine Base in Groton, Connecticut. Developed under a power purchase agreement signed in 2017 and placed into commercial operation on December 16, 2022, the project features two advanced fuel cells that generate efficient and locally sourced electricity. The Subase Fuel Cell project is owned and operated by Groton Station Fuel Cell, LLC, a subsidiary of FuelCell Energy.
CMEEC purchases the output of the facility to serve its MEUs. The facility is also designed to provide dependable backup power to support the U.S. Navy Submarine Base during grid disruptions by providing enhanced “islanding” capabilities. This allows the base to operate independently in the event of a broader grid outage, increasing energy security and resilience.
